Laughing in the Bush

“Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree…”

“Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree.  Merry, merry king of the bush is he!”, as the old song goes.  There is no other avian creature that brings such joy, if not a smile to the denizens of the bush than the kookaburra.  Some find its laugh to be quite jolly, while others find it to be downright shrill.  Anyone who has ever watched any old cartoons that take place in a jungle-like setting, 99% of the time, you are more than likely to hear audio footage of a kookaburra laughing, as to evoke images of an exotic setting.  Never mind the fact that you are not likely to see these birds in the wilds of Africa, but there laugh does make for great ambiance in the wild.  One interesting fact about Kookaburras is that they are excellent hunters.  Did you know that they can kill a snake?!  One quick swoop from the sky, and they can incapacitate a serpent with its powerful beak!  Not so jolly after all!
