Key West: The Key to Paradise!

Key West: The Largest City in the Florida Keys!

Key West is the westernmost and largest island in the Florida Keys.  It sits about 150 miles south of Miami, and about 90 miles north of Havana, Cuba.  This island city has the tropical feel of Hawaii, with the flair of the Caribbean, combined with the flavor of New Orleans, and just a hint of old world Cuba, sans the communism.  From a birds-eye view, it looks like a remote location.  That, however, doesn’t stop this place from being one of the hottest tourism destinations in the Sunshine State.  Many natives refer to this city as the Conch Republic, due to a time not too long ago when, thanks to an unusual territorial clause, this island had short-lived period as an independent republic.  Luckily, you won’t need your passport to explore this island paradise!

The island is filled with many examples of old colonial architecture.  Beautiful houses that are reminiscent of a southern plantation or a turn of the century bed-and-breakfast, all with a forest of palm trees surrounding the front yard.  Many famous Americans have made their home here, from renowned author Ernest Hemingway, to former U.S. President, Harry S. Truman.

Key West is also a great place if you are a shopaholic!  Along Duval Street, which is viewed as the main drag of Key West, is filled with a bevy of shops from department stores, to upscale boutiques, art galleries, and clothing stores.  But of course, there are an abundance of souvenir stores hawking everything from dolphin-shaped magnets, to Southernmost route marker thermometers.  Cheap and silly?  Yes!  Worth $5 dollars a pop?  No!  But for a real bang-for-your-buck, stop into one of Key West’s many bakeries and sample some frozen key lime pie, on a stick!

As for what to do?  Put on your bathing suit, hop aboard a motor-scooter, and head down to the water.  With so many beaches to choose from, you’re never far away from a little surf and sun!  Or if you prefer to stay dry, head to a nearby bar on Duval Street, put on some Jimmy Buffet, order up some drinks, and just let the good times happen!

Whether you are a foodie, parrothead, beach-goer, party-goer, or just someone who loves the beach, Key West is the key to fun in Florida!
