Dining Down Under in Downtown Manhattan!

“‘Tucked away on a corner, lies the Tuck Shop!”

While New York City is indeed a melting pot of cultures and cuisines from around the world, there is one particular country that is widely overlooked in the culinary world: Australia.

“Australia’s favorite comfort food!”

Tucked away on a little corner in Manhattan’s Lower East Side is the Tuck Shop, a little restaurant that deals exclusively in Australian food.  That’s right, food from Australia!  In New York City, nonetheless!  The main attraction at this place is the meat pie, which is to Australia what apple pie is to America.  Savory ground beef, seasoned with onions and spices is stuffed into a buttery, flaky pie crust.  While these pies are delicious by themselves, the condiment of choice is either ketchup or hot Sriracha brand hot sauce.  The restaurant also serves a variety of meat pies, including a steak-and-Guinness pie, a vegetarian pie, and for the true American, a “Southern-style” pie which is filled with BBQ pulled pork, and topped with cole slaw.

What is also a plus is the wonderfully, kitschy decor that evokes images of Australian pop culture.  Inside are pictures of koalas, “Skippy the Bush Kangaroo”, framed images of beer cans, maps of Australia, and other things that look like something out of a garage sale in the Outback!  Keep an eye out for a map of the world that is upside-down, or as it is called, an accurate view of the world according to the Australians!

If you’ve got a few dollars to spend, but you don’t have the time, money, or effort to schlep halfway around the world to Australia, stop by the Tuck Shop for some of the best Australian food this side of Bondi Beach!
