Melbourne’s Shrine of Remembrance

Shrine of Remembrance

Shrine of Remembrance

During my first few days in Australia, I spent it touring the great city of Melbourne.  During that time, I visited one of the most beautiful memorials I had ever seen, the Shrine of Remembrance on St. Kilda Road.  Magnificent for both its sheer size, its location, and its prominence. The Shrine of Remembrance, located in Kings Domain on St. Kilda Road in downtown Melbourne.

"Lest we forget Australia's bravest..."

“Lest we forget Australia’s bravest…”

It was built as a memorial to the men and women of Victoria who served in World War I and is now a memorial to all Australians who have served in war.  It is a site of annual observances of ANZAC Day, celebrated every year on April 25th, and Remembrance Day, which is celebrated on November 11th. Easily one of the coolest landmarks I saw during my trip, I loved it for how beautiful it looked, especially when set against the modern day backdrop of Melbourne.  Inside the shrine, I found a treasure trove of wartime memorabilia like patches, medals, photographs, ration kits, tents, and sheet music with patriotic songs; “It’s a Long Way to Tipperary” and “Waltzing Matilda” were just a few of the many pieces on display.  The best part was when I made it to the top of the memorial, which presented me with a breathtaking view of the Melbourne skyline.  From the top, I saw the Eureka Tower, the Rialto, the Performing Arts Centre, the Yarra River, and the many stadiums that dot the landscape.  No trip Melbourne is complete without a visit to this memorial.  Come to pay your respects to Australia’s fallen soldiers, stay for the view.

"Ah, Melbourne! What a View!"
