Hawkesbury River

Just north of Sydney, nestled in the greenest of hills and bushland, you’ll find the iconic Hawkesbury River. This is one of Australia’s longest freshwater rivers, not to mention one of the most beautiful! It winds its way around bush landscapes, houseboats, and farmers. Sample great seafood, swim in the shimmering reflection of the river, hike along the riverbank, or just sit back and listen to the warbling of magpies and kookaburras! All this, and just a one hour train ride from Sydney!

Bunny in Berowra (Part I): Chase through Kuring-gai Chase

There’s nothing like being in the middle of nature.  It reaffirms your senses, reconnects you with what lies beneath your feet, and gives you a sense of comfort.  Once more, it also tests you.  Anyone can walk on two feet and venture off, but it takes both courage, conviction, and a heightened sense of where you are to really see what you are made of.  If you...

The Hawkesbury River Part IV: Anklebiters on a Floating School Bus

The Hawkesbury River Part IV: Anklebiters on a Floating School Bus

With my stomach full from lunch, and the day still sunny and warm, I headed down towards the edge of the Hawkesbury River Marina to do something I neglected to do the first time I was here in 2009: take a ferry ride up the river!  I remember a small pier and shelter box next to the railroad tracks, where I remember also seeing a small barge; it looked vaguely like...

The Hawkesbury River Part III: Remember to Bring Your Swimsuit!

The Hawkesbury River Part III: Remember to Bring Your Swimsuit!

And so, we return to the present: September of 2013 in the town of Brooklyn, NSW, Australia.  I was most fortunate to come back to this idyllic region, especially on such a sunny, warm day!  No really, it was one those days that only existed in the minds of daydreams, children, or the animal denizens of the bush.  The sky, an azure blanket accompanied by a warm...
