Cairns: Gateway to the Great Barrier Reef

Situated on the shores of the Coral Sea in Northern Queensland in northeastern Australia, Cairns is one of Australia’s most scenic cities.  For many this city is the gateway for those hoping to visit the Great Barrier Reef.  For others, it’s a city that lets you explore some of the most beautiful beaches in Australia.  And unlike many other beaches near some of the more major cities like Sydney and Perth, the beaches around here feel less crowded and less touristy.  What’s more, the city is also situated near a lot of Australia’s thick tropical jungle, so anyone looking to do some wildlife spotting is definitely in the right place!

If it were up to me, I’d head right for the water, since this city is really hot!  Because of its tropical location, this city can get humid and often unbearable!  So stay hydrated, and pack your bathing suit!  And if gets too hot, step into the many cool stores around the city, do some shopping, check out the busy night markets, or test your luck at the city’s casino.  And if you are wondering how to pronounce the name of the city, just remember NOT to pronounce the “r”; just think of Cannes, France, but with a more nasal-sounding “a”.
